Body Image Tune Up

Easy ideas for a confidence boost

Becoming a mother is one of the most extraordinary experiences of your life – yet, it can leave you quite depleted of your sense of self. This little bundle of joy is quite demanding and if you happen to have a few running around the house, you may find yourself giving all of your time to your children and none to yourself. Your body image becomes neglected and one morning you happen to stare in the mirror with disbelief as you barely recognize the person who is reflected back.

Let’s see how moms can keep a healthy body image despite their overwhelming responsibilities.

  1. Beauty comes from the inside Eat a well-balanced diet to keep your energy levels and overall health in good shape, while teaching your children good eating habits. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to spend hours in the kitchen to eat healthy meals. Hire a professional dietitian to help you plan quick, wholesome meals. Chances are, you’ll lose weight if you eat right, your skin will glow and your body will dress better. Now, who doesn’t want that?
  2. Children want to be proud of you Adopt quick pick-me-up habits that make you look great at all times. Do it for yourself, but also for your kids. A dab of lipstick will lighten up your face and make you look happier, even if you don’t wear any other makeup. When picking up the kids at school, a colourful pashmina wrapped around your shoulders will give you an instant “finished” look. And don’t forget to accessorize. The right pair of earrings, original pendant and fashionable shoes will add refinement to your outfit. If jeans are your thing, make sure they are fitted to your body type for a great look.
  3. There’s nothing wrong with being selfish You deserve some “you” time during the week. One hour, minimum, of private mom time is essential to your well-being… and sanity. Choose whatever appeals to you; a warm bubble bath, a facial, massage, coffee with friends, exercise, escape to your local bookstore, an afternoon movie, go for a walk or simply sit somewhere quietly with a book. The activity is not the important part, it’s the freedom to be doing something just for you. You will feel rejuvenated and energized; you will look better and will be a much nicer person to be around.
  4. Compliments are ego-boosters Add this great daily habit to your evening routine. Give yourself a heartfelt compliment. Look at yourself in the mirror and say something really nice before you go to bed. Even if you are exhausted, in a bad mood, or feeling discouraged, take these 15 seconds to give yourself appreciation. You deserve it and it will make you look happier. A happy person is a beautiful person!
  5. You are teaching Taking good care of yourself – good hygiene, healthy eating hab its, pulled-together look – will teach your children that it is important to love, care and appreciate one's self. From this belief will grow self-confidence and a sound body image. That is the best legacy to leave them.
